An important part of the ALPHA Leash development journey was understanding both the injury statistics on current dog leashes and the latest dog behavioral science available. This research really solidified the final design and features of the ALPHA Leash and its why we know it’s the safest pet leash on the market.
Leash Related Injuries
We did our investigation using the database. Using the United States National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database, which contains details on every hospital visit caused by, or related to a consumer product. It includes what the product was, the injuries that lead to the hospital visit and other important details.
We analyzed the vast number of entries filtering for dog leash related injuries and then categorized these injuries into 6 main causes; (1) Being pulled down by your dog, (2) Tripping on your own leash, (3) Tripping over a dog leash, (4) Getting caught in a leash, (5) Being struck by a leash, (6) All other injuries.
66% of pet leash injuries or 584 people each year go to hospital because they’ve been uncontrollably pulled by their pet or because they tripped on their own leash. Thankfully the ALPHA Leash is designed to prevent both of these injuries.
How Dog’s “See” the World
Dogs “see” the world through smell and not site. In fact, dogs’ sense of smell is 100,000 times more sensitive to ours. And although their eyes can detect movement better than ours, that’s why they’re so good at fetching a fast-moving ball, their colour detection and detail just doesn’t compare to how amazing our eyesight is.
How this applies to a leash:
a. In order to get more information and to “see” smell something more clearly a dog needs to get closer to things then we do.
b. They can notice a lot of things before we do because smell travels farther then light and around corners. So, what appears to be magic is really that amazing nose putting our eyes to shame.
Dog’s and Connectivity
The concept of you being connected to your dog by a leash isn’t understood by dogs. For the ALPHA Leash team this was a very hard idea to fully comprehend. Essentially it means that a leash is invisible to a dog. Weird right.
How this applies to a leash:
a. When a dog pulls on their leash, they don’t know that they are being held back by you.
b. When a dog feels a hard jerk from their leash, they also have no idea where it came from. A pretty odd feeling, that can make a tense situation even worse. Imagine being pulled back by an invisible force when you start to run up to an old friend.
How these Relate to the ALPHA Leashes Design Features
The ALPHA Leash is retractable
This feature makes for a happy dog because they have the freedom to get closer to smells they find interesting.
It lessens your dog’s anxiety because they aren’t being pulled around by a leash, which in their eyes is a mysterious force pulling them around.
It keeps the leash taught between you and your dog so it isn’t a tripping hazard.
It gives you time to react when your dog starts running after something. And that time to react is important because dogs will often start running after something that is a surprise to us because they can smell, but we can’t see it.
We integrated Gentle Stop Technology
The feature we are most proud of, it allows you to gently correct your dog without freaking them out with a hard jerk.
The gentle stop also helps prevent you being pulled down by your dog, because you have 9x more stopping power then any other leash.
Applying the braking system is as simple as squeezing your hand, your natural reaction to a stressful situation.
We added an End of Leash Warning
Preventing those harmful surprise jerks that scare your dog and can even pull the leash right out of your hand.
